About Us (OLD)

Sconch is a friendly Local Yarn Shop stocking a huge range of yarn, patterns, notions, and books, as well as supplies for needlecraft, felting, spinning, weaving and yarn dyeing. We also offer classes and craft groups.

The yarn shop was started by Sam Conway at the end of 2012 (after having run a business making crochet accessories) and began life as an online shop, combining the benefits of a face to face yarn shop (By always being on hand to answer all of your yarny questions on social media and by email, she has been able to give that personal touch no matter where you are!) with the convenience of online delivery. By early 2013 she was 'forced' to open a retail shop, as people kept visiting the warehouse and Sconch quickly started to grow!

In 2020, Sconch expanded once again, moving into the large barn at Blake House Craft Centre, Essex, and opened a tea rooms alongide the yarn shop. You can now visit us in our beautifully renovated 17th century barn and mooch around looking at the yarns, and then have some yummy cake or a spot of lunch at the same time!

Sconch stocks products from many of the leading brands of yarns, as well as independents, all available for same day despatch. We are on hand seven days a week to deliver an unbeatable level of personal service.

We are open Tuesday to Sunday every week!

Sconch may not be the biggest (yet!) but aims to be the best for service and price.

You can keep up to date with the adventures at Sconch HQ (including the tales of the long suffering Mr Sconch and the little Sconchlet!) on the blog or by following our Facebook page, Instagram, Pinterest or Twitter feed.  Just click on the tab at the top of the page for the blog or the Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter buttons at the bottom of the page.

Or why not pop in and see us at Blake House Craft Centre? We are open Tuesday to Sunday every week!

The boss…

Sam has been crafting for as long as she can remember, and is a crochet (and now knitting!), cross stitch, and felting addict. Often to be found dancing round the shop (normally a sign she has been doing accounts or website updates for too long), she is passionate about colour, yarn, and teaching. You can find the inner workings of her soul on the Facebook page and blog...

Amanda - the Ninja Knitter

The ninja knitter...

Amanda is well known for her unnatural speeds with both knitting and crochet, churning out whole garments in a weekend...she's also a dab hand at repairing damaged work! In addition to working in the shop, Amanda teaches a range of our classes, although she specialises in knitting and crochet.

The Ravelry queen...

Terri loves to knit but is unable to stick with many projects long enough to finish them, hence her large collection of WIPs and overflowing craft room! When not serving customers or stacking shelves, Terri is usally adding new patterns to the ever increasing list in her Ravelry favourites and queue.

The one who makes pompoms...

Robyn is a keen fibre artist. We will update this profile once we get to know her better!

The craft addict...

Jenni is completely addicted to all things craft related and is always looking for new ideas. As well as being a keen knitter and crocheter, she is also our in house 'bag lady' (tee hee!) under the name HalfDoneJen. You can see her products here:

Hugh - the one who fixes things...

The one who fixes things...

Hugh is Sam’s long suffering husband and is in charge of all things website and photography based. He is also a Physics teacher in his 'spare' time during the day…

Anni - Knitting

Hand knit designer Anni Howard is joining us in the spring to teach various classes. Anni’s designs have been published in books and magazines and by commercial yarn companies. She has also collaborated with independent yarn dyers and she sells her patterns through Ravelry. She designs from her studio in Colchester, Essex. Loves: sheep and alpacas. Also loves: teaching other knitters to take their skills to the next level.

Michele - Spinning, Yarn Dyeing and Kumihimo

Michele's great loves are spinning and dyeing, but also dabbles in many other crafts, and can often be seen modelling her own hand dyed, hand spun and hand knitted garments! She gives talks and workshops all around Essex, Herts and Suffolk and is a member of the West Essex & East Herts Guild of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers.
